Boxes and Other Pretty Things
Little boxes that nestle down in the handle are usually turned out of a single blank which is parted in two to make the lid and the base.
It takes a long time and requires precision to make a good turned box.
A number of processes are involved. Firstly the blank is mounted and turned to a cylinder, and the base is parted off. The inside of the lid is formed, including the mortise that the base will fit into. The lid is removed (part-turned) from the chuck and the base of the box is chucked. The base is hollowed out, and the tenon is formed to fit the lid firmly. The lid is pushed on and the top of the lid is completed. The lid is removed again. The tenon on the base is eased to make a slightly easier fit, the outside of the base is completed after which it is reverse-chucked and the bottom completed. The box is then signed and buffed to a shine.
One of my early boxes, turned in 2003 - made of mopane wood. This one houses my very precious 25mm violin maker's plane.
